Sunday: Surya and Vishnu
Sunday belongs to Surya Dev. Offer water (arghya) to the rising sun from a copper pot, then sing Om Jai Jagdish Hare in your evening puja.
Monday: Lord Shiva
Monday is the most popular day for Shiva puja, especially in the month of Sawan. After offering water or milk on the Shivling with bel leaves, sing Om Jai Shiv Omkara and finish with Karpur Gauram.
Tuesday: Hanuman ji
Tuesday is for Hanuman. Recite the Hanuman Chalisa and then sing Aarti Keeje Hanuman Lala Ki. Offering sindoor mixed with jasmine oil is a cherished tradition.
Wednesday: Ganesha and Krishna
Wednesday is linked to Budh (Mercury) and to Ganesha. Offer durva grass and sing Jai Ganesh Deva. In some families Wednesday is also kept for Krishna (Budh is linked with Vishnu), so Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki is sung too.
Thursday: Vishnu and Brihaspati
Thursday (Guruvar) honours Brihaspati, the guru of the gods, and Lord Vishnu. Wear or offer yellow, and sing Om Jai Jagdish Hare. Thursday is also popular for Satyanarayan Katha.
Friday: the Divine Mother
Friday is for the goddess in her many forms. Sing Om Jai Lakshmi Mata for prosperity, Jai Ambe Gauri for strength, and Jai Santoshi Mata if you keep the Friday vrat.
Saturday: Shani Dev and Hanuman
Light a mustard oil diya near a peepal tree or at a Shani temple and sing the Shani Dev aarti. Hanuman aarti on Saturday is also traditional, as Hanuman is believed to protect devotees from the harsh effects of Shani.
Start small
