Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Hanuman, the devoted servant of Rama and a symbol of strength, courage and humility. It is usually observed on the full moon (Purnima) of Chaitra, in March or April, though some regions mark it on other dates. Tuesdays and Saturdays are also special days for Hanuman worship.
What to keep ready
- An image or idol of Hanuman, ideally with Rama and Sita
- Sindoor mixed with jasmine or sesame oil, and a red or orange cloth (chola)
- Red flowers, a garland, and tulsi leaves for Rama
- Prasad: boondi laddoo, jaggery-gram or bananas
- Diya, incense, camphor and the usual aarti thali items
Simple puja vidhi
- Bathe, wear clean clothes and sit before the image.
- Light the diya and offer a flower and tilak.
- Offer sindoor and the red cloth, if your tradition does so.
- Recite the Hanuman Chalisa. Even one recitation done with attention is meaningful.
- Sing Aarti Keeje Hanuman Lala Ki and offer camphor.
- Many devotees add Shri Ramchandra Kripalu, since Hanuman is always devoted to Rama.
- Share prasad with family and neighbours.
Customs to know
- Many people avoid certain foods and keep a simple fast on Tuesdays.
- Some devotees chant “Jai Shri Ram” or “Om Hanumate Namah” through the day.
- Traditionally, strict rules about touching the idol are kept in some temples. At home, keeping the space clean and being respectful is what matters.
Saturday and Shani
Hanuman is worshipped on Saturdays also, and devotees seeking relief from Shani’s difficult phases often pray to Hanuman. You can pair the day with Shani Dev Aarti. See our weekly aarti guide for the full plan.
A simple message
Hanuman’s greatest teaching is service without ego. Whatever you offer, let it be done with humility and a clear heart.
